Toroni is in the SW. end of the peninsula "Sithonia" in Chalkidiki.It was founded by the Chalkidians of Evoia during the 8th-7th century B.C. and at the same time became one of the most important cities not only of Sithonia but of all Chalkidiki.It took an active part in the Persian Wars, as well as in the Peloponnese War. The port of Toroni is located east of Likithos, a small cape that rises today 13 metres above sea level. During the Byzantine years the whole area was the Dependancy Athos Monasteries. Excavations have been taking place in the area since 1975 by the Archaeological Company in cooperation with an Austalian Institute. Today there have been found ruins and the walls of the old city (Vigla), where one can find besides the castle of Likithos, an ancientchristian church of Saint Athanasios, a three dome basilic of the 5th century. Modern Toroni has become a summer resort ideal for families.Except for some average sized hotels, the majority of accommodation available are small, family run businesses with rooms, flats and villas to be rented. There are traditional taverns, pizzerias,cafeterias,bars, mini markets and shops with seasonal items that one can find in the area. Moreover, you can visit other nearby beaches such as Destenika, Aretes, Kalamitsi,Sikia, Sarti, Kavourotripes.Finally a popular destination is the largest natural port in Greece, the "Porto Koufo". The distance from the airport of Thessaloniki is 135 kilometres.The nearest medical centre is 30 kilometres away and the General Hospital of Poligyros is 60 klm.
